My name is Denise Smith. I am an Herbalist and Herbal Preparation Maker.
Alignment with Nature + Ecology
Holistic Wellness + Vitalism
+ Taking Responsibility for our own Health,
are some of my deepest values.
The story of how these values evolved in me will offer some additional orientation to who I am.
I grew up in the vast wilderness of the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota, in a family that shared time in nature. This gave me a foundation of connecting to the Natural World. This theme continues as I now reside in SW Montana. The wilderness here has it’s own unique characteristics, and is just as vast.
My path to becoming an herbalist began with my Grandmother Muriel’s bookshelves.
Various books on herbal home remedies were there, and while exploring them a seed was planted. The themes of taking our health into our own hands, and allying with the natural world, enlivened my heart. Here began a thread that is woven throughout my life. Independent study of Herbalism + Holistic Wellness have been a constant ever since.
At the 2016 Portland Plant Medicine Gathering, I attended a workshop with Sajah Popham entitled The Key to Herbal Energetics and Constitutional Theory.
This class introduced the foundations of Traditional Western Herbalism, which is based on the Elements + an ecological lens from which to view people and plants. That day a path opened + I focused my herbal studies.
I enrolled in The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, founded by Sajah and his wife Whitney Popham. Through their curriculum I explored the rich teachings of Traditional Western Herbalism + integrated clinical skills with roots deep in Vitalisim.
Vitalism is a tradition of learning to listen to what the body is expressing + trusting the body’s intelligence.
While exploring ways to support my nervous system, another path opened in my herbal studies journey. I found Whole Plant Herbal Infused Oils and the work of Kami McBride. While engaged in her course on Herbal Infused Oils, I learned innovative twists on traditional infusion techniques, and methods of self care that these oils could support.
Using oil as a delivery route for herbs has been a synergistic way to work with the nervous system.
Lovingly applying Herbal Infused Oils to specific areas, or the whole of your body, is a self care technique known as Herbal Body Oiling. Herbal Body Oiling has become a daily part of my own self care practice.
I am passionate about offering these Ecological Perspectives on Wellness + Herbal Infused Oils to my community. Connecting People with Plants for the Wellness of All is the work of my heart.
